The Commission heard from the mother of a boy, 'Kobe', who has severe autism and ADHD, about his experience in two Queensland state schools. She was very complimentary of 'Kobe's' experiences at the first school, where supports were in place for him to transition into the school and develop socially, and a there was focus on implementing a plan for 'Kobe's' education.

In contrast, the high school 'Kobe' attended provided less support for transition, reduced his attendance hours, and only applied adjustments inconsistently. The witness said the inconsistent application of 'Kobe's' plan by some teachers led to circumstances where he exhibited violent behaviour. He was suspended multiple times before being expelled for 12 months. 'Kobe' is now supported by NDIS-funded staff at home and his mother believes his behaviour has regressed.
