The McGowan Government's new roadmap to reduce Western Australia’s reliance on single-use plastics will ensure the needs of people with disabilities are met.

The Plan for Plastics will see regulations developed and implemented for the phase-out of plastics such as plates, cutlery, stirrers and straws across WA.

With the announcement of the roadmap yesterday, the Government said it will be consulting with the disability sector to understand the needs of those who require single-use plastics and implement appropriate measures going forward.

"There are some circumstances where single-use plastics are important – and we won’t overlook those cases," Premier Mark McGowan said in a Facebook post yesterday.

"For example, a working group will be established to make sure that the phase-out of plastic straws doesn’t negatively impact people requiring straws to meet their life needs. This will include continued supply of certain single-use plastics to those who need them."

The news comes after ongoing consultation between NDS and the WA Government to ensure the needs of people with disabilities were not overlooked in the new plan.
