Support NDS’s campaign for the Tasmanian election
12/03/2024
NDS seeks your support in our call for commitments from the state political parties in the Tasmanian State Election on 23 March.
This election is a crucial chance to advocate for state government policies that strengthen the disability support sector and create an inclusive Tasmania where all people live safely and equitably.
NDS calls on all candidates and political parties to make commitments across key disability policy areas.
Key issues for the state election
NDS met Disability Minister Jo Palmer on 19 February to discuss the disability sector’s priorities for the election.
Our Top Five Priorities are:
- Increase peak body funding to support high quality services
- Support the implementation of safeguarding initiatives
- Develop a skilled, capable, and sustainable disability workforce
- Foundational Supports — a joined-up ecosystem of support
- A Tasmanian Social Procurement Framework.

On 29 February, Shadow Minister Luke Edmunds attended our Disability Royal Commission listening session, where he heard Tasmanian providers’ concerns. We later met Luke to discuss disability sector election priorities and explain the complex reform environment.
NDS will send our Tasmanian election requests to state political parties, asking for their commitment. Before election day, we will compare the party responses to our platform and share the results with our networks across Tasmania.
What you can do
To strengthen our call for commitments from the state parties, we will seek the support of local candidates across state electorates. This is where you come in.
As a disability service provider with networks and relationships in your local community, your local networks will be key to building support across the state for our campaign.
Support the campaign by contacting your local candidates, sharing the NDS Top Five Priorities, and asking them to support inclusive policies at the state election.
We’ve created a sample candidate email [doc] you can use.
You can find the names of election candidates on the Tasmanian Electoral Commission website.
You can also encourage your staff, the people you support, and their family and friends to talk about their experiences and where state disability policies can be improved.
Share with them the message below. It shows how they can raise issues with local candidates by email, at community events and on social media.
Together, we can build support across the state for stronger and more inclusive disability policies.
