International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability.

This year's theme is 'Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World'.

This year, we will celebrate and showcase the achievements and contributions of people with disability in Western Australia through a social media campaign, in partnership with platinum sponsor the Department of Communities.

Commencing on 30 November 2020, NDS will highlight the stories of five people with disability over five days on our social media.

NDS remains committed to increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability on this important day and we invite you to help to amplify the messaging. Further information will be provided soon regarding this, however we are encouraging Members to get involved as follows:

How you can get involved

  • Join the conversation on social media by highlighting stories of people with disability in your workplace or organisation through your digital media channels. Use the hashtag #disablestereotypes and #InclusiveWA so we can promote and encourage the conversation. For further information contact Suzanne.George@nds.org.au
  • Bring people together and share the message of inclusion and diversity by hosting your own small localised event to mark IDPwD. You can post your event photos to social media and/or images to Suzanne George to be included in our IDPwD wrap-up.
  • Download, print and share the materials and resources from International Day of People with Disability.

Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson has announced that $100,000 in sponsorship is available for inclusive events and activities to mark the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) in December.

The Department of Communities has funded Developmental Disability WA (DDWA) to provide 100 sponsorships for community organisations to celebrate IDPwD in 2020. Applications close, 9 November 2020.

In celebration of people with disability in Western Australia, NDS will also light key landmarks around the state in blue.
