DRC report finds children with disability disproportionately represented in child protection and criminal justice systems

Royal Commission Update

30/06/2023

A new report from the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) has found that children with disability are disproportionately represented in the child protection and criminal justice systems. Care Criminalisation of Children with Disability in Child Protection Systems was commissioned by the DRC to examine the experiences of children with disability who have been criminalised through the child protection system.

The report found that children with disability are disproportionately represented in the child protection system and are more likely to be removed from their families and placed in out-of-home care. Children with disability are also more likely to be subject to criminalisation through the child protection system, which has a devastating impact on their lives.
